Orchestral Studies
Dr. Michael Jacko, Head of Orchestral Studies
Booker T. currently offers two performing orchestral ensembles: Sinfonia and Camerata.
Sinfonia rehearses and performs string and symphonic orchestra literature, focusing primarily on collegiate and professional level repertoire (UIL PML grade 5). Camerata rehearses and performs string orchestra literature, focusing primarily on preparatory repertoire (UIL PML grades 3-4). Members of Sinfonia and Camerata perform one solo and one chamber jury per semester, participate annually in UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest, and compete annually in DMEA all city and TMEA all region auditions. Members of Sinfonia are encouraged to audition for TMEA all state upon qualifying for all region.
Sinfonia has performed in an annual side-by-side concert with the Dallas Symphony for the DISD Music Memory Competition at the Meyerson Symphony Center, in the 2018 Forth Worth Festival of Orchestras at the Bass Performance Hall, and at the Premiere Performance Invitational at Carnegie Hall. In recent years, BTW's orchestral ensembles have performed unabridged works by Beethoven, Debussy, Holst, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Still, Walker, and many others.

Individual orchestra members have participated in Dallas Symphony’s Young Strings organization, Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra, GDYO Philharmonic, GDYO Sinfonietta, GDYO Dallas String Ensemble, TMEA All State Symphony Orchestra, TMEA All State Philharmonic Orchestra, and TMEA All State String Orchestra, TMEA Region 20 Honors Orchestra (including principal players in all string sections), TMEA Region 20 Symphonic Orchestra; as well as summer festivals at Brevard, Carnegie Hall (NYO and NYO-2), Eastern Music Festival, Meadowmount, Sewanee, and Tanglewood, among others.
Studio Strings is a new performing ensemble, established in 2019 to coincide with the opening of BTW’s new recording studio. One of this ensemble’s primary missions is to serve as a laboratory orchestra for BTWHSPVA’s student composers and arrangers. Studio Strings will read and record original works created by the BTW community, enabling our composition students to workshop their creations throughout the year with a live ensemble, and to capture high-quality recordings with live ensemble to accompany their composition portfolios for college auditions and composition competitions. The other primary mission of Studio Strings is to serve as a rehearsal laboratory for BTW’s many chamber music engagements throughout the Dallas community. In recent years, BTW Orchestras have performed at various gala events for local charities, DISD events, and private events.

In collaboration with the piano program, our school offers a chamber music course designed as a rehearsal laboraty for BTW’s many chamber music engagements throughout the Dallas community. BTW musicians also perform at various gala events for local charities, DISD events, and private events.
